Christchurch Jobs

According to a recent article in the New Zealand Herald (16.11.2011), the Christchurch jobs market has expanded and is expected to grow rapidly once, the issues regarding planning, aftershocks, insurance cover and other bottlenecks are being resolved.

Currently about 21 000 full-scope repairs have been completed or are in progress. This is over and above 40 000 emergency and heating repairs that have been completed already.

In the area of project management, in various disciplines, especially infrastructure, the work load has been intense and will only grow as more claims are handled and the bottlenecks are eliminated. Some areas are starting to look for additional people as we get closure to the next stage of recovery and rebuild. Currently according to industry sources there are 25 project management Christchurch jobs vacancies (mainly project and works managers, quantity surveyors, contract supervisors).

The following skills are also in demand and will sharply increase EQC loss adjustors, project and works admin staff, qualified painters, plasters, carpenters and bricklayers. Qualified painters, in particular, are in short supply already.

Another area of high demand is that for senior structural engineers. More than 300 structural engineering staff from all over NZ and overseas have been employed on Christchurch jobs. Industry experts are predicting that approximately 200 more highly qualified people in this area will be required over the next five years, as the next stages of recovery and rebuild occur. The industry expects a shortage for structural and geotechnical engineers for Christchurch jobs and projects, as they need to service the business as usual market, as well as the recovery and reconstruction demand. Seismic qualified structural engineers, in particular, will be in high demand, both for experienced and entry level people.

It is estimated once the rebuild phase is truly underway an estimated 1000 more people will be needed in civil infrastructure. Underground pipes-, other services specialists, earthworks people and other specialists (engineers and technicians) will be the first in high demand. A senior manager of MWH-Mainzeal, a leading reconstruction consortium says the scale and volume of work is “mind-blowing” and exciting.

Christchurch jobs for experts in environmentally sustainable building design and construction will also be in high demand, as we go forward.
